Are You a Hillary together with your College Application Essay?

As I’ve been viewing the Democratic national convention earlier this week, I noticed how much election speeches are like college application essays.

Both are sales pitches. Both applicants and college applicants wish something badly!

Candidates want votes. You want to get admitted.

Applicants make their instance through speeches.

Collegebound students make their instance through college application essays.

Both these speeches and essays use the first person (I, me, us…), they both use a familiar ‘voice,’ as well as both have singular objective.

Here are some associated with other common objectives that make them effective:

  1. Becoming likable. You won’t get votes or accepted if other people can’t stand you. It is that easy.
  2. To prove you might be confident and capable. You must prove that you will get the task done be it managing a country or excelling in your target college or university.
  3. To showcase your character.Voters and admissions counselors need to know that which you worth in order to select you over other people.
  4. Becoming human.Candidates and collegebound students are almost faceless unless you become familiar with them. Applicants need to get past their slogans and voting record. Collegebound students want to get past their grades, test ratings and variety of activities.
  5. To get attention and be memorable. It doesn’t matter just how great you might be if nobody cares that which you have to say. Nobody knows that much better than politicians. Collegebound students should try to learn how to distinguish by themselves from the competition, and do it in way that’s perhaps not gimmicky, offensive or boastful (anyone come to mind?).

What is the easiest way to generally meet all 5 of these objectives?

Get personal and express real-life stories from your history!

Like politicians, some students have a simpler time with this inside their college application essays than others.

Just Take Hillary Clinton.

As a former First Lady, former state senator and former Secretary of State, she actually is more ‘qualified’ to operate this country than either her husband, former President Bill Clinton, and President Obama (Obama actually said about her in the current message during the convention.).

Yet she has already established a difficult time getting individuals to connect along with her, to trust her, to like her.

Why?

It is difficult for Hillary to get individual.

Inside her message yesterday accepting the nomination, she even acknowledged this limitation:

‘The truth is, through every one of these many years of public service, the ‘service’ part has always come better to me personally than the ‘public’ part,’ Mrs. Clinton said. ‘I get it that some people simply have no idea things to model of me personally.’

racism thesis

(Notice just how that confession by itself made her that even more likable!)

So, I ask you: Are you a Hillary?

Are you a student who has been severe and dedicated to your school work, and spent a lot of time providing right back through community service along with other volunteering activities? Are you smart, hard-working, committed and passionate regarding the values and objectives?

Yet during the same time, can you find it challenging to open up about yourself as well as your emotions? If provided an option, are you more comfortable behind the spotlight? Does it feel unnatural to admit your flaws or weaknesses?

Yes?

Then you might be a Hillary (I’m perhaps not speaking politics here; this is certainly all about personality types).

But did Hillary let that hold her back?

No. She acknowledges her weaknesses and is focusing on them.

She actually is attempting to become more open and share information about her individual life and history.

The smartest thing she did inside her message was express individual stories.

You can use these same tools in your college application essays to produce them more effective.

If you trust your real-life stories as well as your individual history to power your essay, it will obviously prompt you to more available and likable.

Like Hillary along with other political applicants, you should utilize your college application essays for connecting with others.

You will be super bright, done all of the right test-prep, AP classes and extracurriculars. But if you don’t learn to expose your personal side, it is impossible for universites and colleges to know who you are.

Being open and vulnerable may not come obviously for you personally. It is certainly doesn’t for Hillary.

But like her, it is possible to find out how.

Here are links to my most useful posts to teach you to write a college application essay that is individual, and can assist you to achieve all five associated with objectives I in the list above that make an essay (and campaign message) effective: be likable, show confidence and character, be person and grab the reader’s attention.

This year marks my 30th year staying in California.

I enjoy this state! I moved here from over the country to join my future husband in 1986, and not looked right back.

The people are welcoming and forward-minded (for the most part), the dramatic pure beauty of ocean, mountains and dessert is everywhere, and also the climate is near-perfect.

Also, California’s general public educational system is unsurpassed, from the system of community colleges towards the Cal States to its world-class study and mastering universities, like Berkeley and UCLA.

I totally realize why a lot of associated with students I use on college application essays including those from California or other states and on occasion even other countries shoot for one or more UCs inside their variety of target schools.

Trouble is, the quantity of applicants grows, which makes it more competitive and hard to get accepted.

A lot more than 206,000 students applied to attend the University of California as undergraduates in fall 2016, a jump of 6.4 per cent over fall 2015 and also the 12th consecutive year of record-breaking high numbers of applicants.

Just like other college applications, the University of California required essays (which they now call Personal Insight Questions) would be the one place you’ve got the power to get noticed from the competition.

Utilizing the large number of essays each UC needs to read, it is hard to imagine just how these essays count in who they accept. But most of the admissions departments reportedly utilize some form of rubrics to evaluate them, and just take them very seriously.

I encourage students never to worry a lot of about how precisely much these count in the application process. You merely have no idea. Focus on making each individual Insight Question essay count whenever possible.

This week, The University of California revealed its application goes live August 1, 2016. (that is just a couple of days away!)
